Civita di Bagnoregio

The dying town

Civita di Bagnoregio is a particular, unique and exceptional village perched on the tuff, surrounded on all sides by air only, like a bird on the highest and blasted point of a dead landscape”. The central part is formed by “a bunch of black houses and ruined walls on the Tuff, erected in space” that seems hanging halfway between reality and dream joining the land by “a single road, as narrow and withe as a ribbon, which connects to the world on this side and to the safe mainland, the black lock of houses, the high tuff hill suspended in the middle of the sea of clays and deep cavities”.With these words, Bonaventura Tecchi described his Civita, a unique, enchanting and at the same time spooky place, which “attached to life amid a Lunar chorus of silent and sparkling gully”, it tells tirelessly “the tale of the dying village over the centuries”.

A metal statue, depicting a woman that seems to contemplate the small village on nostalgic cliff of Tuff which seems to crumble; the monument shows the words of Bonaventura Tecchi, the novelist-essayist who lovingly devoted to her native country: "And remained so for a moment, happy and thoughtful, against that background flashed of white rocks and fearful depths, as if the beauty of a woman's face which descends into the heart of a man is truly one of the hardest things to die in this brief, fleeting lives."
The square, where the statue is located, is connected to the small but beautiful village by a narrow bridge long 300 m, which is the only way of access to the town; hence, during the crossing, it is possible to have a privileged viewpoint to admire the wonderful Valley of the Gullys that opens at the foot of the bridge and that mystical and imaginative ones may seem a kind of gateway to the afterlife

The small village, where the time seems to have stopped, after crossing the long bridge, you enter through a large door of Etruscan origin. The door, also known as the Cava Door, was carved into the tuff in Etruscan times and later called Porta Santa Maria, because next to a church built in honour to the Virgin Mary.
Originally there were two doors; what you see today is enriched by a series of friezes by the strong symbolic value. On the walls are engraved in fact some crosses, who presumably must be attributed to the Templars returning from trip to the Holy Land; these, inserted inside triangles, evoke the crosses of Golgotha in Jerusalem.
On the sides of the door are some of the reliefs in stone; here a lion that blocks between theirs claws a human head wants to celebrate the victory that got the inhabitants of Civita in 1457, when they rebel against the dominance of the powerful family of Orvieto Monaldeschi. It crosses the door and you enter into an open-air museum: Civita di Bagnoregio.

Built probably on the pre-existing structure of a pagan temple of the Vth-VIth century, brings with it the traits of the Romanesque style, although contaminated with various restorations and modifications over the centuries..Originally the structure was of Basilica type without the current presbytery and the lower choir in 1511 replaced the East wall, the two choirs, a crypt and the high altar, demolished on the basis of a project by the architect Nicola Matteucci of Caprarola. Even the facade was modified, giving the church a more Renaissance appearance; in 1524 he was then added the central portal and in 1547 the two sidebars. On one side of the Church is a Bell-Tower, to which are incorporated two Etruscan sarcophagi of basalt stone; inside you can admire a fresco of the school of Perugino, a wooden crucifix of Donatello and a ceramic statue of 1593 depicting St. Donat, Saint to whom the Church is named. In 1695 the Cathedral was severely damaged by an earthquake. Due to its central location on the cliff, seems to be the fulcrum around which remains anchored what remains of the city dies.

The Lunar aspect of the Valley of Gullys that surrounds the cliff kidnaps the gaze of those who adventures along the bridge leading into Civita A wide and lonely Valley opens its eyes with rugged ridges of clay, produced by the relentless erosion and shaped by the weather. The waters of the rivers have carved underlying poor clay of Pliocene, left here by the ocean that 2 million years ago filled the Valley.
The highest and spectacular ridges are the complex "Montione" and "Cathedral" to be admired for their grandeur and Majesty. The spectral landscape of Gullys is then softened at the base by the presence of beech forest s and oaks, native plants of the area. For the beauty offered by nature in this area, the Valley of the Gullys has been proposed for the establishment of a nature reserve to protect everything that nature has been able to build and shape over millions of years.

It is odd knowing that...

Civita is now an open-air set; many movies, dramas and commercials have been filmed inside the small village; these included La strada (1954) (The Street) Fellini, I due colonnelli (The two colonels) (1962) with Totò, Contestazione generale (General Challenge) (1970) with Alberto Sordi, Non ci resta che piangere (Here just have to cry) (1984) and with Troisi e Benigni, the video clip of the single by Eros Ramazzotti Stella gemella (Twin star), directed by Tornatore (1996) and an endless series of commercials and dramas.
